Where to Eat After the Show at Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center empties fast. A Metropolitan Opera curtain can come down close to eleven, David Geffen Hall lets out onto the same block, and a crowd that has spent three hours seated arrives on 63rd Street hungry — at precisely the hour most Upper West Side kitchens have stopped cooking.
Rosa Mexicano at Lincoln Center is directly across the street, on the second floor of the Empire Hotel at 44 W. 63rd Street, and on Friday and Saturday we serve until 1:00 AM. Not a shortened bar menu after ten. The dining room, the full kitchen, and the guacamole cart.
Most of the neighborhood plans around the early seating, and so do we — our pre-theater dining service is built for the 5:00 to 7:00 window. But the table after the show is the harder one to find in this part of the city, and it is the one this page is about.

When the Kitchen Actually Closes
The useful thing to know about late dining near Lincoln Center isn’t when a restaurant’s doors close, but when its kitchen does. Ours runs until close every night that we are open.
- Monday through Wednesday — 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
- Thursday — 7:00 AM to midnight
- Friday and Saturday — 7:00 AM to 1:00 AM
- Sunday — 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM
The Friday and Saturday close is what matters. A three-act opera, a full-length ballet at the Koch, a Vivian Beaumont curtain call and the walk across the plaza still leave well over an hour. Weeknight concerts at Geffen Hall generally run until 10:00 PM, comfortably within a Monday-through-Wednesday close and well within Thursday’s. We also open at 7:00 AM, which is how the same room manages breakfast for the hotel and weekend brunch for the neighborhood. It is a long day on purpose.

A Late Menu That Is Not an Afterthought
Late-night food fails predictably: the kitchen shrinks the menu to whatever reheats, and the meal becomes a formality. The full menu stays available here until close, though the dishes that suit the hour are worth naming.
Guacamole is made at the table in a lava-stone molcajete, to the heat you ask for, and it is the right thing to order while the rest of the party is still coming up from the coat check. Tacos al pastor and the alambre arrive quickly. Queso fundido and enchiladas suizas are heavier and better after they sit a while. Churros with hot chocolate close it out, which at midnight is a more sensible idea than it sounds.

THE BAR AFTER THE SHOW
Margaritas, Mezcal, and a Room That Stays Awake
The frozen pomegranate margarita is a Rosa Mexicano original. It was on the first menu in 1984, and it is still the drink most tables order first. After a performance, it does a specific job: it is cold, it is not a nightcap that ends the evening, and it gives a party something to discuss besides the second act. Beyond it there is a tequila and mezcal list deep enough to sit with, and a full bar for the half of the table that does not drink agave. The bar keeps its own seats, so two people arriving at 11:30 without a reservation is an ordinary event here rather than an imposition.
TWO MINUTES FROM EVERY STAGE
Walking Distance From the Met, Geffen, and the Beaumont
44 W. 63rd Street sits at the corner of Columbus Avenue, directly opposite the Lincoln Center campus. The walk from the Metropolitan Opera House is roughly three minutes. David Geffen Hall, the David H. Koch Theater, the Vivian Beaumont, and the Walter Reade are all within five minutes. The 66th Street–Lincoln Center stop on the 1 train is two blocks north, and the A, B, C and D at Columbus Circle are a ten-minute walk south for anyone heading downtown afterward.

What time does Rosa Mexicano close near Lincoln Center?
Our Lincoln Center location at 44 W. 63rd Street is open until 1:00 AM on Friday and Saturday, until midnight on Thursday, until 11:00 PM Monday through Wednesday, and until 10:00 PM on Sunday. The kitchen serves the full menu until close.
Can I get dinner after a performance at the Metropolitan Opera?
Yes. The Metropolitan Opera House is about a three-minute walk away, and on Friday and Saturday we serve until 1:00 AM, which leaves well over an hour after a late curtain.
Do I need a reservation for a late table?
Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday, when performances across the plaza release at once. Walk-ins are usually seated at the bar, which serves the full menu.
Is the full menu available late, or only a limited bar menu?
The full menu is available until close, including tableside guacamole made to order in the molcajete.
How far is the restaurant from David Geffen Hall?
